Name : James Berardinelli / Alias : ReelViews
It's an attempt to wed philosophical science fiction concepts with bloody horror - a dubious endeavor that somehow works.

Name : Owen Gleiberman / Alias : Variety
Instead of developing its themes, it uses them as grist for an overload of "commercial" action.

Name : Peter Hartlaub / Alias : San Francisco Chronicle
Scott's pacing, building an early foundation of uneasiness, starts to collapse as the script resorts to illogical actions in service of the plot.

Name : Jeannette Catsoulis / Alias : New York Times
Mr. Scott creates a disappointingly skeletal Frankenstein story that entertains efficiently but vacuously.

Name : Rafer Guzman / Alias : Newsday
"Morgan" works as a reasonably effective sci-fi thriller - perhaps even more so if you've never seen a movie by Ridley Scott.

Name : Richard Roeper / Alias : Chicago Sun-Times
This is one of the worst movies of 2016.

Name : Linda Barnard / Alias : Toronto Star
A mediocre sci-fi/thriller about a human-looking A.I. teen who can't escape her factory-installed features.

Name : Alonso Duralde / Alias : TheWrap
Whatever its flaws, this is a rare genre movie that allows two women - both Mara and Taylor-Joy are coolly riveting, particularly when they're playing off each other - to take center stage in both the drama and the action.

Name : Michael O'Sullivan / Alias : Washington Post
If only the questions it asks were more involving, and not just philosophical window dressing on what is ultimately a fembot-in-a-cage action flick - albeit one with a nice bit of torque.

Name : J. R. Jones / Alias : Chicago Reader
Luke Scott is the son of Alien director Ridley Scott and shares with his dad a gift for staging scenarios in which institutional calm erupts into savage and exhilarating violence.

Name : Kenneth Turan / Alias : Los Angeles Times
You may start to wonder when the last time an ensemble this good was placed in service of a script this thin.

Name : Ellen Brait / Alias : Globe and Mail
Even I, a self-prescribed horror movie skeptic, found myself wrapped up in Morgan - I was invested in the characters, I (mostly) bought into the plot and even found myself embracing some of the gore by the end.

Name : Bill Goodykoontz / Alias : Arizona Republic
"Morgan" . is creepy, and sometimes pretty smart. And sometimes not.

Name : April Wolfe / Alias : Village Voice
Even if his film's plot is predictable, the younger Scott is returning the ensemble thriller to its roots with something far more important than an airtight story: compelling, well-drawn characters and the talented actors to play them.

Name : Amy Nicholson / Alias : MTV
Thanks to Morgan, we know what bedtime stories Ridley Scott told his kids.

Name : Sheri Linden / Alias : Hollywood Reporter
Until its letdown of a final stretch, Morgan is a gripping group portrait of menace and vulnerability, each punch to the solar plexus a burning question, timeless and of the moment.

Name : John Anderson / Alias : Wall Street Journal
The film, directed by Luke Scott and laden with high-tech eye candy, should have been a lot more complex and psychologically interesting than it is.

Name : Tom Russo / Alias : Boston Globe
It's mostly when the younger Scott mines other influences and trends that his work falters, ultimately turning more predictable than he realizes.

Name : Allen Salkin / Alias : New York Daily News
A lot makes me uneasy about where biology and technology are going. But Great Scott! Is "Morgan" really the best you can do?

Name : Chris Nashawaty / Alias : Entertainment Weekly
Scott's low-key sci-fi thriller zips along with a sense of creeping dread-at least until it sputters to a third-act twist that anyone who's semiconscious will see coming down Broadway.

Name : Jesse Hassenger / Alias : AV Club
It would be a stretch to call the movie any kind of feminist statement, but it does boast an equal-opportunity nastiness alongside its enjoyable stupidities.

Name : Sandy Cohen / Alias : Associated Press
The predictable twist hampers the story's suspense, and the film doesn't dip beyond the superficial.

Name : Liz Braun / Alias : Toronto Sun
It's not a terrible movie, but it is a lacklustre feature debut for director Luke Scott.

Name : Stephanie Zacharek / Alias : TIME Magazine
Morgan is an unassuming little thriller, nicely put together and engaging enough while you're watching, though its memory is likely to vaporize hours, or even minutes, after you've seen it.

Name : Susan Wloszczyna / Alias : RogerEbert.com
Before the midway point, it is pretty obvious what the eventual outcome and supposed big reveal will be.

Name : Adam Graham / Alias : Detroit News
Anya Taylor-Joy . plays the title character with a mixture of vulnerability and detached humanity that makes her like the world's most frightening teenager.

Name : Tirdad Derakhshani / Alias : Philadelphia Inquirer
Pared-down, efficient, and easy to follow, Morgan dispenses with the long, complicated pseudoscientific explanations that bog down so many sci-fi movies.

Name : Matthew Lickona / Alias : San Diego Reader
The point of things quickly shifts from engaging the audience's interest and/or intellect to merely keeping it stimulated and guessing.

Name : Kyle Smith / Alias : New York Post
A dull, listless, derivative chunk of celluloid lacking any spark or even basic storytelling ability.

Name : Katie Walsh / Alias : Tribune News Service
Ambiguity makes "Blade Runner" a classic; a lack of ambiguity means "Morgan" strays into a run-of-the-mill genre territory, despite its deeper ideas.

Name : Soren Anderson / Alias : Seattle Times
Nicely done, Mr. Scott, nicely done.

Forty years ago, artist Alex Carver (Morgan Freeman) bought a run-down apartment in a sketchy part of Brooklyn with his wife, schoolteacher Ruth (Diane Keaton). Today, their neighborhood is now very hip and their apartment worth a small fortune. The now- retired Ruth and Alex haven't changed - they are still as much in love as ever. But they have let Ruth's niece Lily (Cynthia Nixon), a real estate agent, list their property to see what the market might bear. On the eve of their open house, the Brooklyn Bridge is rumored to be under a terrorist attack, sending the media into a frenzy and people's attitudes about living in New York. Closer to home, Dorothy, the Carver's beloved dog, is suddenly having trouble walking. While Dorothy is having expensive treatment at the vet, Ruth convinces Alex to go apartment hunting in Manhattan, where they miraculously come across an ideal place they might actually be able to afford. As the world around them seems to mirror their own chaos and confusion, Ruth and Alex realize the same bond of love that has kept them together all these years will allow them to see their way through this crazy weekend as well.(C) Focus

Name : Gerry O / Alias : Kid First
From the story line, it may seem that this film will be boring to kids. But, when I started watching this film I fell in love with it. Morgan Freeman's perfect timing of jokes and Diane Keeton's wonderful and priceless emotions make this film entertaining and heartfelt from the very start to the last second. It is a bit hard to say what the main genre is. Of course, there is a lot of romance between the two characters, Alex (Morgan Freeman) and Ruth (Diane Keeton), there is also that funny side that makes it all that more enjoyable. And, there is still a serious dramatic side which keeps you on the edge of your seat till the end. The story starts when an elderly couple, Ruth and Alex, live in a high up, massive apartment in New York City, Brooklyn actually. However, the five flight of stairs they need to take is getting more and more challenging so they decide to move to a location with an elevator. To add to the challenges, their dog is in the hospital undergoing treatment for spinal injury. The director, Richard Loncraine makes this movie feel authentic and rustic and also shows how current society stereotypes elderly people, how they truly feel about it and how wrong it is. The cast is wonderful and the acting is just superior with serious and comedy scenes mixed together and standing out all the time. I also like how they lightly touch upon problems of the past as well as problems of today. For example, Ruth and Alex got married in a time when bi- racial couples were not welcomed with open arms. Then it shows how today a gay couple is making an offer on a house. They submit it along with a note telling how they tried to adopt a child and finally were able to adopt one. It is something Ruth and Alex wanted to do when they were younger but were denied. My favorite scene is when they have an open house to sell their apartment and a huge crowd of people comes through, looking at everything and touching everything. Alex doesn't like it but Ruth tries to see the positive side but fails. I like that scene because it shows how the couple's life isn't perfect and also makes the film feel very real. Not only this moment does that but many others as well. This film has perhaps several moments of adult content but none that is too mature. I recommend it to kids ages 10 to18 and give it 5 out of 5 stars.

Name : Rex Reed / Alias : New York Observer
It's good to see first-rate artists devoted to a film that doesn't pander to an unsophisticated audience with a thirst for violence and smut.

Name : John Anderson / Alias : Newsday
A couple of pros, playing attractive characters in an amiable yet topical story.

Name : John Hartl / Alias : Seattle Times
The movie ends just as you expected it to end, and there are almost no surprises along the way.

Name : Pete Vonder Haar / Alias : Village Voice
What starts as a somewhat charming - if prosaic - story of love in the time of gentrification inexplicably spends most of its third act mired in the finer points of apartment hunting, like a tastefully lit HGTV show.

Name : Graham Fuller / Alias : New York Daily News
Diane Keaton and Morgan Freeman are pleasantly entertaining in "5 Flights Up." But the movie's far too pleasant for far too long.

Name : Mike D'Angelo / Alias : AV Club
If 5 Flights Up is worth seeing, it's primarily for the pleasure of Keaton and Freeman's company, plus maybe for some tips on buying and selling an apartment.

Name : Lou Lumenick / Alias : New York Post
Morgan Freeman and Diane Keaton have unexpectedly great chemistry in this warm and funny comedy about a couple who contemplate leaving a walk-up apartment in Brooklyn they've occupied for their entire 40-year marriage.

Name : Richard Roeper / Alias : Chicago Sun-Times
Sometimes you see a play and you can imagine it being a movie. Sometimes you see a small movie like this, and you can imagine it working better as an intimate stage play.

Name : Isabella Biedenharn / Alias : Entertainment Weekly
Based on Jill Ciment's wry novel Heroic Measures, the film is at its best when it sticks with the everyday .

Name : Tirdad Derakhshani / Alias : Philadelphia Inquirer
5 Flights Up is a sweet film with a few nicely turned lines, some good jokes, and some very lovely dialogue. But it's not much more than fluff and air.

Name : Peter Keough / Alias : Boston Globe
The duo provide a bit of wit and warmth amid the contrived subplots and the self-satisfied moralism.

Name : Gary Goldstein / Alias : Los Angeles Times
What a pleasure to see a simple, finely tuned dramedy about real adults with real emotions in a real-life situation.

Name : Stephanie Merry / Alias : Washington Post
"5 Flights Up" is far from perfect, but it's also undeniably touching.

Name : Christy Lemire / Alias : RogerEbert.com
What begins as a sweetly sentimental story ends up being cloyingly melodramatic.

Name : Stephen Holden / Alias : New York Times
The lead performances are so perfectly in sync that Alex and Ruth really feel like an old married couple who know each other's foibles and cherish every tic.
